The HuntAndGather extension is meant to provide for some nice functionality for a user of the Del.icio.us social bookmarking service.
HuntAndGather opens tabs corresponding to the latest URLs stored on del.icio.us given the desired tag. In future releases, the option will be given to display a list of clickable links.
- The extension allows a user to search his/her current bookmarks for a tag or multiple tags from an edit box in a toolbar.
- The extension also allows a user to search the global Del.icio.us folksonomy for tags or multiple tags from an edit box in a toolbar
- The extension allows for easy posting to a user's Del.icio.us bookmarks
On the day this project was first hosted on Mozdev, Hunter S. Thompson had taken his own life
Using HuntAndGather I found so many interesting web resources related to his passing with del.icio.us that I doubt I would have found using Google. Del.icio.us has some interesting advantages over Google (a $50B+ company -> Del.icio.us: first round VC funding?).
The power of the people cannot be more evident than the awesome resource that is Wikipedia. Imagine what might happen if a web search engine can be engineered by people... I'm not suggesting this extension makes that happen, but I hope that it exposes the possibility. Del.icio.us (and HuntAndGather) is STILL evolving!
It was pointed out in Adam Mathes' recent paper on folksonomies that:
"There is a fundamental difference in the activities of browsing to find interesting content, as opposed to direct searching to find relevant documents in a query. It is similar to the difference between exploring a problem space to formulate questions, as opposed to actually looking for answers to specifically formulated questions. Information seeking behavior varies based on context."
